Silver Spring, MD – The Home Builders Care Foundation (HBCF) has been awarded the Maryland Nonprofits Seal of Excellence for successfully completing the Standards for Excellence® certification program. HBCF voluntarily opened itself up to scrutiny by a “jury of its peers”. The peer review team examined Home Builders Care for compliance with the Maryland Nonprofits Standards for Excellence: An Ethics and Accountability Code for the Nonprofit Sector®.
The Standards for Excellence® are based on fundamental values such as honesty, integrity, fairness, respect, trust, responsibility, and accountability. Home Builders Care’s programs and services, management, fundraising and financial practices were examined in depth before the certification was awarded. Home Builders Care is one of the first organizations to be certified under the Standards program that began in 1998.
Patti B. Kane, Director of Home Builders Care comments, “Submitting to the scrutiny required for certification under the Standards for Excellence wasn’t easy, but it was a worthwhile process for us. This seal shows we have taken every step to ensure we’re serving the community and operating in an ethical and upright way and we’re proud to wear it. HBCF’s work to build for the homeless and others at-risk exemplifies both our dedication to our cause and to meeting the highest standards of ethical practice. We will continue to strive for excellence.”
According to Darryl A. Jones, Sr., Chief Executive Officer of Maryland Nonprofits, “Organizations that successfully complete the Standards for Excellence certification program exemplify openness, accountability and a commitment to excellence. Maryland Nonprofits encourages nonprofits to participate in the voluntary certification program because the standards can help build their capacity, which enables them to serve their communities more effectively." Jones added, "Nonprofit organizations must be accountable to the public. The Seal of Excellence helps our donors, policymakers, and communities be more confident that these are reputable organizations that are acting ethically in their program operations, governance, human resources, financial management and fundraising practices."
The first effort of its kind in the nation, the Standards for Excellence® program was developed by a team of volunteers from the state’s nonprofit community.
