Sasha Bruce Youthwork
A green-energy retrofit of a REACH youth home, cutting utility bills so a nonprofit for at-risk youth can put more of every dollar into the young people it serves.
About the project
Staying "in the green" to stay in the black
In October 2011, an energy-efficiency retrofit was completed at the REACH youth home operated by Sasha Bruce Youthwork, a District-based nonprofit that meets the urgent needs of runaway, homeless, neglected, and at-risk youth with shelter, counseling, educational remediation, life-skills development, and substance-abuse support.
Led by HomeAid Washington DC, it was one of the first projects under HomeAid America's Environmental Sustainability Program, funded by the Walmart Foundation. The full retrofit carried a construction value near $60,000, with more than $10,000 donated in-kind by partner companies, and it was projected to cut the home's energy use by at least 40 percent.
The retrofit
What went green
A whole-home efficiency package upgraded nearly every system in the townhome.
Budgets are tight, and while we struggle to stay "in the black," creating energy efficiencies at this facility will also help us to stay "in the green."Deborah Shore · Executive Director, Sasha Bruce Youthwork
