Ulman House

A home away from home for young adults battling cancer and their caregivers, blocks from Johns Hopkins, with a community kitchen made first-rate by Maryland's next generation of builders.

About the project

A first-rate kitchen for a home away from home

On July 14, 2018, the Ulman Foundation celebrated the grand opening of its new home away from home for young cancer patients and their caregivers in East Baltimore, just steps from Johns Hopkins Hospital.

In the months leading up to it, members of MBIA's Future Industry Leaders (FIL) Council worked alongside Home Builders Care to make sure the community kitchen was first-rate, with quality, durable cabinets, countertops, and appliances. FIL members even helped Ulman House secure special parking permits from the City of Baltimore.

Future Industry Leaders step up

This project was powered by MBIA's Future Industry Leaders Council, the younger members of the building community, who put their time and networks to work so that families facing cancer would have a warm, functional place to gather and cook together.

A kitchen is where a house becomes a home, especially when you're far from your own.

From durable cabinets and countertops to full appliances, the FIL team made sure the heart of Ulman House would hold up to constant use and countless shared meals for years to come.
