How our
program works.

From a nonprofit's first inquiry to the ribbon cutting, HBCF matches shelter-related construction needs with the donated skills, materials, and management of Maryland's building industry. The model is built to be adaptable and flexible.

Three ways we build

Project levels

Every nonprofit's need is different, so our charitable construction program comes in three tiers, from a single-trade fix to a multi-year build.

Level 01 — Entry

Turn Key

Our basic program makes it easier for nonprofits to complete small projects, usually involving only one trade.

Small scope · single trade · fast turnaround

Level 02 — Mid

Classic

More comprehensive than Turn Key: higher-valued, multi-trade initiatives that run over a longer duration.

Broader scope · multiple trades · longer timeline

Level 03 — Flagship

Marquee

Our top-tier projects carry more visibility and complexity, and sometimes span a year or two from start to finish.

High visibility · highly complex · 1–2 years

Start to finish

The charitable construction process

A typical project moves through these stages. HBCF stays involved at every step, serving as the liaison between the nonprofit and the builders.

STEP 01

Nonprofits submit an inquiry and application for assistance.

STEP 02

Staff and committees assess the potential project.

STEP 03

A site visit takes place during the assessment.

STEP 04

Pre-development technical assistance is provided as needed.

STEP 05

Scope of work and budget estimates are created.

STEP 06

Building industry members are recruited for the work.

STEP 07

Board approval leads to a Project Captain assignment.

STEP 08

Donated labor, materials, and services are secured.

STEP 09

Construction agreements are established.

STEP 10

HBCF serves as liaison between the agency and builders.

STEP 11

Project management and administrative support are provided.

STEP 12

The project and its volunteer efforts are celebrated and shared.

Built to flex

No two nonprofits are alike, and neither are their buildings. This model is made to be adaptable, so we can meet each partner where they are, whether that's a single-day repair or a two-year capital project.
