From Operation Tom Sawyer to today
HBCF began as the charitable arm of what was then the Suburban Maryland Building Industry Association, founded on a simple belief: home builders have a responsibility to serve the growing communities and families around them.
Operation Tom Sawyer begins
Founder Robert L. Mitchell launches Operation Tom Sawyer as the charitable arm of the Suburban Maryland Building Industry Association, believing every home should be part of a thriving community.
The first official project
The very first OTS project takes place at the Muncaster Youth Home in Montgomery County, Maryland.
Articles of Incorporation filed
The OTS Foundation files its Articles of Incorporation in the State of Maryland, formalizing the organization.
Tax-exempt status obtained
OTS secures 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status and is later re-branded as the Home Builders Care Foundation.
Merger with the Building Industries Foundation
The Home Builders Care Foundation merger with the Building Industries Foundation becomes official, broadening our reach and resources.
More than $25 million given back
Since our inception, HBCF has made in-kind contributions of more than $25,000,000 in materials and labor to projects assisting the homeless and others at risk. The total value of those projects is estimated at more than double that amount.
