What we look for.
HBCF partners with nonprofits that are ready to build. Before we take on a project, we look for organizations that meet these ten criteria, so every donated dollar and volunteer hour makes a lasting difference.
Our criteria
Ten things we look for
Strong candidates for project assistance typically check all of these boxes.
Nonprofit registration
Meet all nonprofit registration requirements at both the state and federal levels.
Community support
Have solid community support for both your program and the construction project.
Property control
Own the property, or lease it long-term for a token amount.
Zoning & licensing
Be in compliance with local zoning and program licensing requirements.
Complete application
Have fully completed our application for assistance.
Supportive services
Offer supportive services and housing that help clients achieve stability.
Operational funding
Have stable operational funding already in place.
Matching funds
Have the capability to raise any necessary matching funds.
Permitting cooperation
Be cooperative throughout the building and permitting process.
Ten-year commitment
Commit to using the property for its stated charitable purpose for at least ten years.
On the ground
Every project starts with a visit
Before a single board is cut, our team gets on site, assessing needs, touring facilities, and getting to know the people we'd be building for.
We routinely save our nonprofit partners thousands of dollars in construction costs.
By leveraging the resources of the Maryland building industry, labor, materials, and expertise, we help our partners stretch every dollar toward their mission.
Check the boxes?
Then let's talk about your project
If your organization meets these criteria, we'd love to hear from you. See how the process works, then submit a request.
