Cordell Place

A four-story building in downtown Bethesda with 32 furnished apartments for chronically homeless residents, given new life through donated construction.

About the project

Permanent housing, restored

Cordell Place is a four-story apartment building in downtown Bethesda that houses 32 furnished units for chronically homeless residents. The building offers shared kitchen facilities, shower rooms, secure access, concierge services, and on-site case management, everything a resident needs to regain stability.

It's operated by Coalition Homes, Inc., a program of the Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless. The structure began as a four-story office building about a decade before it was converted into supportive housing.

The build

Builders giving back, kitchen by kitchen

In early 2021, Tri Pointe Homes led a major renovation of the building's shared kitchens. The Maryland-based builder coordinated suppliers and subcontractors for the work, with nearly all of it donated outright.

The team kept at least two of the four kitchens running the entire time, so residents never went without.

Working through the height of the pandemic, the crew managed COVID-19 safety protocols while keeping resident services continuous. The result: brighter, safer, fully functional kitchens for the people who call Cordell Place home, at a fraction of what the renovation would have cost at retail.
